A Greater Prophet

Text: Deuteronomy 18:15

Moses. This guy was a legend. Parted the Red Sea. Spoke to God on the mountain top. At one point, his face supernaturally shone like the sun because he literally was that close to God. He also is what theologians call a type, specifically a Christological type. He was a type of Savior. He was a type of priest. He was a type of shepherd. He was a type of someone who leads people to the Promised Land. By the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he even seemed to know that his life was only meant to point to someone greater.

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers, it is to him you shall listen.” (Deuteronomy 18:15)

I wonder how often Moses reminded Israel of the promised One to come. I bet he did all the time. And yet, even with Moses’ relentless encouragement, God knew that the nation of Israel would hold Moses in such high regard that they would be prone to venerate him, especially after his death. Maybe that is why God buried Moses Himself so no one could find his bones.

Another brushstroke by the Creator. The promise of a greater Prophet. Mysteries still abound. The Divine Painter smiles, paintbrush in hand.
