The Light of the World
Text: Luke 2:27-32
There is nothing better than an outdoor fire on a cold night. The light, piercing a starry night. The heat, attacking the ability to see your breath. All fears seem to melt away. The darkness, meeting its match. But on that night in Bethlehem, the Light of the world had finally arrived.
I know the Shepherds were excited. Obviously, Mary and Joseph were proud parents. But Luke tells us about a man who God kept alive so he could see the Christ child. His name was Simeon.
And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:27-32)
When I was young, I imagined this guy Simeon was hundreds of years old. Super long beard. Almost like a mythical figure. And though I now know this is likely not the case, Simeon was able to finally die. He saw with his own eyes the Light of the world. He saw the child who would bring salvation. He held the One who would bring peace. His net of mercy would even include the Gentiles, a shocking but beautiful revelation.
Finally, Christmas is here. The weary world rejoices.
