A Virgin Can Have A Baby?

Text: Isaiah 7:14

There is an old saying: There is nothing in life you can count on except death and taxes. I want to add one more. Death, taxes and—virgins cannot have babies. Yep. Pretty certain about all three. But then the prophet Isaiah gives this prophecy below.

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

It is at this point, the naturalist, the humanist looks at this painting and scoffs. A virgin birth? Preposterous! And in one sense, this skeptic is right. It is impossible, humanly speaking. But nothing is impossible for God.

One last thing, though a virgin conceiving has all of the attention, don’t miss the last word of this prophecy. Immanuel. This means God with us. Wow. Okay. Let me get this straight. This seed, talked about in Genesis 3, is going to be—a Son, a king, a prophet, of virgin birth, of the line of Judah and now he is divine? Or maybe just god-like? This revelatory painting. So beautiful and so mysterious.
