A Decent Looking Human
Text: Isaiah 53:2
Are you treated differently if you are good looking? Yes. Without a doubt. Good looking people are admired more and generally speaking, more doors open for them. Is it fair? No, but life isn’t fair. Have you ever noticed that superheroes are always good looking? How about the Greek and Roman demi-gods? Seen an ugly one? Nope. They all are unbelievably beautiful, muscular, perfect in appearance. Therefore, logically, you would think that the Chosen One would be the best looking human ever. But He wasn’t. He was just an average looking human.
For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. (Isaiah 53:2)
God has said many times in the Bible that He uses the foolish things of this wise to shame the wise. Apparently, in these eternal councils of old, the Godhead decided not only that God the Son would go and rescue the world, but He would purposely enter as a decent looking human.
Why does this matter? Well, in one sense, it doesn’t. God always looks at the heart, not outward appearance. But in another sense, it does. The painting is meant to magnify the glory of God, not the glory of man. Progressive revelation is exciting. Every century of divine revelation the identity of the Seed became clearer and clearer. Be ready, Christmas is coming.
